Noah as a reader
Noah learned to read through being read to and practicing words and spelling in his early years of school. He can also recall earning Pizza Hut coupons for reading or having books read to him. This gave Noah an early incentive to put effort into learning how to read. Learning how to read is often done like this. People read for many reasons. Some people like to learn, some enjoy it and do it for fun, while others do it to look cool or "hipster". Reading can give people knowledge that may not appear on the internet or conventional wisdom. This is rare, but it is possible. In order to be a good reader, the number one factor is the amount of reading one does. You could also increase your reading ability by increasing your vocabulary or studying other things, but reading more will aid the most effectively in one's effort to increase their reading ability. Noah finds reading the easiest when he is invested in the story and is in a quiet environment. He has more difficulty when the literature is more dry and he is less interested. Noah struggles with this. He excels much more at the books he gets to pick rather than those picked for him. When Noah is looking for his next book to read, he searches for a few things. He generally prefers a book to be in first person, fiction or nonfiction. Noah likes books that have an element of human suffering in them. Not out of sadism, but more to see how the narrator deals with adversity. He enjoys seeing how they deal with it and what they think of it. Noah likes to see the protagonist grow throughout the story. He likes to see that they have changed and become more mature at the end than they were in the beginning. Due to these circumstances, he generally likes reading books from the viewpoints of teenagers or young adults. The amount of reading Noah does at home is rather sporadic. When he has reading assignments he reads every night. When he doesn't have reading assignments he may only read once or twice a week. Lately he has been studying every night. Noah believes reading to be beneficial and recommends it to others, but not necessary for life. A good ability to read is necessary, but being a regular reader isn't something you need to lead a good life. He feels you don't need to read every night to be happy or smart, but it certainly helps. He enjoys it on long car rides or rainy days when he isn't playing guitar. Noah's main belief is "The more the better".
Noah as a writer
Noah learned to write through alphabet lessons early on in preschool, and then learning how to spell a little bit after that. Learning to write for him came right around the same time period as learning to read. People write for various reasons. The most common reasons to write are to communicate and entertain. People can also write to make a living. Authors can make a lot of money. In order to write well one has to have a good understanding of vocabulary and rhetoric. The ability to reread and edit is also beneficial. The ability to understand grammar is also something that shouldn't be forgotten. Noah enjoys writing when there aren't many guidelines on how or what he has to write. He has to be relaxed and be writing about a topic of his choice to enjoy it. He is really in his element when he can just let his creative juices flow. Noah generally decides what to write by recalling interesting events he has either read or seen from a movie or book. He can also draw ideas from things that happened in the real world as well. He finds a certain element he likes and goes with it. He can also take the same event and change the setting or a few other elements of the story to make it his own. Although he can sometimes draw ideas straight from his head. He has some original ideas in his arsenal as well. Noah feels like he gains the most from feedback that is targeted toward his structure. Noah feels like he has a solid understanding of grammar and spelling, but not always plot foundation. He appreciates it the most when people give him ideas to add in or maybe tell him when something should end rather than continuing. Noah rarely writes at home, if ever. He does write down information whilst studying or doing assignments, but seldom writes a story because he wants to. Noah feels that his writing is a semi accurate depiction of himself. Scatterbrained, creative, and not afraid to walk on the line a little bit. He is usually able to write down exactly what he is thinking, but not always. Noah thinks he is a decent writer when he puts the effort in, but he knows there is lots of room for improvement. He is hoping his AP lit class will help him with that issue.
